단순 모션 캡처를 넘어 “감정조차 CG화했다”는 극찬을 얻었던 퍼포먼스 캡쳐는 특히 <아바타>가 가져온 놀라운 기술 혁신 중 하나다. 제임스 카메론 감독을 비롯한 <아바타>의 제작진은 동공의 움직임부터 눈썹의 떨림 등 안면근육의 미세한 움직임까지 CG화에 성공하며 감정조차 일체화된 ‘아바타’를 완성해낼 수 있었고, 여기에 ‘시뮬 캠’이라는 새로운 장비로 실사와 CG간 오차를 최소화해 새로운 가상 세계로의 몰입을 가져오기도 했다. <아바타>가 시도한 새롭고 혁신적인 방식의 CG는 배우들의 자연스러운 연기를 이끌어냈을 뿐만 아니라, 캐릭터 움직임이나 폭발 장면 등도 사실적으로 표현해냈다.</span>
